Should shared viewing use the original playback speed when one of us prefers it faster?

Entertainment category photographEntertainment

My partner picked up the remote halfway through the opening scene. 'You haven't put it on fast again, have you?' I had changed the playback setting to 1.25 before she sat down.

When I watch alone, I often choose that speed. I like getting through an episode in less time. She says the pauses and reactions matter to her, especially in a comedy. I told her it was barely different, which didn't help: she'd noticed without seeing the setting.

I'd assumed we could fit an extra episode into the evening. She'd wanted to relax with one. I wasn't trying to hide the change, but I also hadn't asked.

Should our shared viewing default to the original speed, or is there a compromise that doesn't mean one person spends every scene noticing how it feels wrong?

She noticed the change, so 'barely different' doesn't answer her experience. Acknowledge that you adjusted a shared screening without asking. Your solo preference can be valid without becoming the setting she discovers halfway through a scene.

You were optimising for another episode; she was choosing how to enjoy one. Decide how much time you want to spend together first. More completed episodes isn't necessarily a better result for the evening you both agreed to share.

A smaller speed increase won't automatically be a compromise if she still dislikes it. Ask whether she'd like to try one; accept no if she wouldn't. Keep faster playback for the things you choose to watch separately.
