Can we watch a documentary before checking every disputed detail?

Entertainment category photographEntertainment

My partner paused the documentary to search for a film's release date. By the time he found it, I'd forgotten why that film was in the scene. We were watching a programme about early stunt performers, and it was our fifth pause.

I like his interest in whether the narration is accurate. I don't want to accept everything just because it appears in a documentary. But I'd planned to follow the whole argument, then discuss what needed checking.

He says letting a questionable detail pass means absorbing it as fact. I suggested noting the time and returning to it afterward. He thinks we'll never actually do the follow-up. He may be right, because I've said that before and gone straight to bed.

What would let us take accuracy seriously without turning a ninety-minute programme into an evening of interrupted searches?

You don't have to settle a claim to keep watching; you can leave it undecided. Say that explicitly when you note a timestamp. Continuing the programme needn't mean either of you has accepted the narration's version.

His concern about the promised follow-up has a basis in what you describe. Pick one or two points to check afterward and leave time for that before bed. A smaller promise you keep may work better than putting every query on a list you'll never revisit.
