Can I go to the theatre alone after my friend cancels without finding a replacement companion?

Entertainment category photographEntertainment

My friend couldn't make Saturday's play and immediately started suggesting people I could take instead. I'd been wondering whether to enjoy the evening on my own.

We each bought our own ticket. She's dealing with hers, so I don't need to sell a spare or recover her money. I booked because I wanted to see the production. She says an empty seat beside me will make the night feel sad and keeps sending friends messages asking who is free.

I haven't agreed to that search. If someone joins, I'll spend the afternoon coordinating dinner, travel and a meeting point instead of just going. I've never attended a play alone, so some of her concern has made me doubt what sounded appealing.

How do I stop the replacement plan without making her feel I've rejected the company she originally offered? I'd like to find out whether I enjoy a solo evening rather than assume it needs repairing.

'I was looking forward to going with you, and now I'd like to try going alone. Please stop asking for a replacement.' Both parts can be true. Her cancellation changed the plan; it didn't make your remaining ticket incomplete.

Thank her for wanting the evening to work out, then tell her what help you actually want: no more invitations sent on your behalf. Otherwise her thoughtful intention keeps producing arrangements you'll have to decline.

Plan the parts that appeal to you: perhaps dinner when you want it, then the play without arranging anyone else's arrival. You don't have to build a perfect independent adventure. It's one evening, and afterward you'll know more about your own preference.

She may be picturing how she would feel with the empty seat, rather than how you will feel. If you do feel lonely during the interval, that doesn't prove her prediction was right about the whole night. Mixed enjoyment is possible with company too.
