I tell our club organiser I support shorter meetings, then stay silent when she proposes them

Confessions category photographConfessions

After the meeting, I told the organiser she'd made a good point. She said, 'It would have helped to hear that in the room.'

Our small club keeps extending meetings. I would prefer them to end at the time we agreed. Before the latest one, I told the organiser I supported her idea of a shorter agenda. When she proposed it, two people objected and I stared at my notes. She didn't claim to speak for me, and I didn't correct anyone. I simply let her look like the only person who wanted the change.

Then I privately complained that the meeting ran late again.

How do I apologize without promising to become fearless in every discussion? I want my support to mean something more than agreement she can only hear after everybody else has gone home.

The organiser named the gap precisely: she needed your view in the room. You can acknowledge that you agreed privately and withheld the same opinion publicly. That is more useful than another round of telling her the proposal was excellent.
