I keep calling my dream job perfect because I insisted it would be

Confessions category photographConfessions

My cousin said, 'You must never get bored there.' I gave the answer I always give: 'Honestly, it's the dream.'

I work in a small costume workshop. I wanted this job for years and talked about it as though it would turn every day into something I loved. Some days are wonderful. Others involve sorting fasteners, finding missing pieces and repeating a task I thought I'd finished. I sometimes get bored or frustrated, then feel ashamed of those feelings because everyone remembers how determined I was to get here.

My cousin is curious about similar work. She hasn't made a decision based on my comments, but she keeps asking what an ordinary day is like. I've mostly given her the exciting parts.

How do I describe the job more honestly without sounding as though I regret choosing it? I want to stop defending the fantasy I sold before I'd ever done the work.

Tell your cousin about one ordinary day, including the fasteners and the missing pieces. You can still say what you enjoy. That gives her a more useful picture than replacing 'perfect' with 'actually terrible', neither of which describes the mixed experience in your post.

Your earlier enthusiasm doesn't obligate you to enjoy every repetition now. You can stand by choosing the job and revise what you expected it to feel like. An honest update isn't a confession that everybody who doubted you was right.
