I shortened a borrowed wedding veil without asking. How do I tell my aunt?

Weddings category photographWeddings

"Bring the veil when you come for lunch," my aunt said. "I'd love to see it laid out again." I said yes, then remembered the strip of lace in my dress bag.

She lent me her wedding veil. I had its lower edge shortened because it caught under my shoes at the fitting. I told the alterations shop I had permission. What I actually had was my aunt saying, "Make yourself comfortable in it." I knew those weren't the same thing when I answered the shop's question.

The removed piece is still in the bag. I don't know whether anything can be done with it. My husband thinks I should explain that the veil looked beautiful in the photographs. I think that's an answer to a question she hasn't asked.

Lunch is on Sunday. Do I call now, or take the veil and explain in person? I want to acknowledge what I chose without presenting the wedding photographs as proof that it was worth it.

Call before Sunday. She is currently expecting the veil she lent you, and you know that isn't what you'll bring. Telling her beforehand gives her space to react without also having to host lunch.

You don't need to argue that "comfortable" could mean alterations. You've already recognised that you knew permission was missing. Say you made that choice and are sorry.
