Can we adapt a family ring-passing ritual without making it feel pointless?

Weddings category photographWeddings

My aunt timed the practice with an empty ring box. It took nine minutes to travel through one row of cousins because everybody stopped to say something.

In her wedding, guests held the rings briefly before they came back to the couple. She wants us to include that family custom. We'd like to, but there will be ninety people at ours and our ceremony plan has a short space for it.

My partner doesn't want the actual rings travelling around the whole room. Auntie offered a closed box instead, then said she worried it would feel like passing a prop.

I suggested inviting guests to write a short wish as they arrive and keeping the rings with the person bringing them forward. Auntie said that sounded like the guest book we already have. She's right about the overlap. I want to keep the affection in her idea without adding a long circuit we will spend watching the box.

What part of her custom do you actually want: guests touching the rings, a collective pause, or receiving their good wishes? Agree on that as a couple before changing the objects. Otherwise each workaround may preserve the bit neither of you cares about.

Ninety guests don't have to repeat exactly what happened in a smaller family wedding. You can appreciate her memory without promising to reproduce it at the same scale.
