I got punished for following the rule too closely

I knew the meeting was going to be annoying. I did not know I was going to become evidence. What happened was a manager asked for loyalty before asking for facts.

I knew the meeting was going to be annoying. I did not know I was going to become evidence.

What happened was a manager asked for loyalty before asking for facts. I could have smiled through it, but then my name would be attached to the wrong version. I was dealing with a senior leader and a contractor at an office social event. Plastic name badges clicked against glasses. People got very brave once the person with less power walked away.

I was trying to stop a joke without risking the contractor's renewal. I did not say that part out loud. The contractor later said they did not need rescuing. The leader now avoids me. Now the next meeting is awkward, and a written statement is due before end of day. I changed the subject too abruptly.

I keep coming back to the same uncomfortable point. Intervention can center the helper instead of the target.
