The offer says “creative lead,” but I’d be the only designer. What should I ask?

“You’d own the whole look,” the founder said. Then I asked who else was on the design team. There isn’t one.

I’m considering an offer from a small homewares company. The title is creative lead, but there are no direct reports. I’d make the packaging, website graphics and shop materials myself. The founder would approve the work.

At my current agency, I’m a designer with a senior colleague who reviews my ideas. I sometimes wish I could make a decision without passing it through three people. I also learn a lot when someone explains why my first version isn’t working.

The new title sounds like progress, and the chance to build a consistent style appeals to me. But I’m not sure whether I’d be leading the work or simply being the person available to produce all of it.

What would help you judge the role beyond its title? I don’t want to dismiss a useful opportunity just because the team is small, or accept it because “lead” looks good.

The title can wait while you look at a normal month of work. Ask how many product launches, shop requests and website changes are planned, and what happens when they arrive together. Owning the look could be satisfying. Being expected to produce every asset at once could be a very different job, even if the title stays the same.
