Should I tell the MRI unit about my fear of the scanner before the appointment?

Health category photographHealth

The booking call was almost finished when the administrator asked, "Any questions?" I said no. Then I spent the evening looking at photographs of MRI scanners and feeling trapped just imagining the tunnel.

The scan was ordered to investigate a medical concern. I have not had an MRI before. My brother says telling the unit I am frightened will only delay it, and that I should close my eyes and get it over with.

[NHS advice says to contact the hospital before the appointment if you feel anxious about an MRI or fear small spaces](https://www.nhs.uk/tests-and-treatments/mri-scan/). I want to ask about the process and available support rather than cancel without a conversation.

I have already arranged a day away from work. What would you say in the call so the unit can plan with me, without making promises about what I will tolerate or asking the internet to choose a calming medicine?

You can start plainly: "I didn't mention this on the booking call, but I'm very anxious about the enclosed space and want to discuss how we can prepare." You are giving the unit information it can use before you arrive.
