Mum wants to crush a large tablet. How do I help before her next dose is due?

Health category photographHealth

Mum brought out a rolling pin and said, "The medicine is the same whether it's whole or in yoghurt."

She is having trouble swallowing one of her prescribed tablets. She has not crushed it or taken it mixed with food. I do not know whether this exact medicine can be altered, and I do not want to solve the difficulty by guessing.

[NHS advice says not to crush tablets, open capsules or change medicine without medical advice, and that a pharmacist can advise about alternatives or permitted changes](https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/problems-swallowing-pills/).

We are contacting the pharmacist today because the next dose needs a plan. Mum says she has swallowed plenty of pills before and does not want a fuss made over this one. I want to help her explain the problem without deciding it is only nerves or telling her to miss the dose.

What information should we have ready for the pharmacist, and how can I make the call with her rather than turn it into a conversation over her head?

Have the original pack, medicine name, strength, prescribed directions and the time the next dose is due. Explain what happens when she tries to swallow it. Ask what to do for that dose if the usual form cannot be taken.

Let Mum describe the difficulty if she can. You could handle the label or take notes with her agreement. The rolling pin may be her attempt to keep control of a familiar routine, not evidence that she is incapable of participating in the advice.
