Should I change a reading challenge when finishing books has become the main goal?

Entertainment category photographEntertainment

I picked a ninety-page novella because it would move my reading tracker from seventeen to eighteen. I wasn't particularly interested in it. Beside the bed was a longer book I'd wanted to start for months.

At the beginning of the year, I set myself a goal of twenty-four finished books. It helped me make time for reading. Now I keep checking the count, choosing short titles and treating anything unfinished as time that didn't contribute.

A friend says I should honour the goal instead of changing it when it gets inconvenient. She's right that I chose it myself. I also chose it because I wanted more pleasure from books, not a reason to avoid the one I actually want to read.

What could I keep from the challenge while giving myself room to start something long, stop something dull and finish the year below the number I picked?

The goal helped you make time; that's the part worth keeping. Try protecting a few reading evenings without deciding how many finished titles they must produce. You can assess whether you enjoyed the change rather than whether the tracker moved quickly enough.

There's nothing inferior about a short novella. The revealing detail is that you weren't interested in this one and chose it for the count. Put the long book beside your chair and begin it before turning a revised challenge into another design project.
