My partner wants private vows and I want to say mine at the ceremony. Can both work?

Weddings category photographWeddings

We compared our drafts and mine was nearly a page. His was two sentences: one funny, one serious. Then he said he'd rather read anything more personal to me alone.

I thought writing our own vows meant we were both preparing something to say publicly. He thought we meant choosing words together and deciding later where to use them. Neither of us checked.

Our officiant has asked what personal material we want to include. I'm comfortable speaking in front of our guests and want to say why I'm marrying him. He wants to make his promises without feeling watched for a reaction. I don't want him performing three minutes of emotion because my draft happens to take three minutes.

Would it feel unbalanced if I said longer personal vows publicly and he kept his short, with private letters afterwards? I can imagine being completely happy with that. I can also imagine spending the whole ceremony wondering whether the room thinks he cares less.

The room doesn't need to know the lengths of the drafts you started with. Decide what each of you is happy saying, then let the officiant help that sequence feel deliberate. Equal feelings don't have to produce equal word counts.

Your worry about guests reading the difference as a difference in affection is understandable. But solving it by asking him to sound like you could cost him the private moment he is asking for.
