My friends want me to preorder so we can play at launch. Can I wait without opting out of the group?

Gaming category photographGaming

The group chat has a launch-night sign-up with three names and a blank beside mine. "Get the preorder in before you forget," came the reminder. I haven't forgotten. I haven't decided.

The game costs $60 in the listing I'm looking at. I could spend that, but I'd rather see how the released game works before buying it. My friends have followed every trailer and are excited to discover it together. Waiting means I may miss that particular first evening, and I can see why they want a definite answer about the fourth player.

I told them "probably," because declining felt like saying I didn't share their excitement. Now they are planning around a yes I haven't given. Nobody has forced me to pay; I have kept the slot uncertain.

How do I give them a clear answer while leaving open the possibility of joining later? I don't want to promise a launch-night purchase just to avoid the smaller disappointment of an empty place on a sign-up.

Tell them they should plan launch night without you for now. That resolves the practical cost of your "probably" while leaving the purchase undecided. They can find a fourth player rather than continue organizing around a commitment you don't want to make.

Waiting for release is a preference about when you spend your money. Your friends' excitement doesn't make it a lesser way to enjoy games. Equally, they don't have to hold their first playthrough until your decision is made.
