My friend did my grocery shop and substituted several favourites. How do I thank her without accepting the same swaps every week?

Food category photographFood

"I got you the better-value ones," my friend said, putting two shopping bags on my table. She'd picked up my groceries while I was stuck working late. I sent her the receipt total straight away.

The list had specified the cereal and coffee I like. She'd bought different ones, though she said my choices were in stock. I hadn't given a spending limit or asked her to find cheaper alternatives. I know the substitutions came from a helpful place, but breakfast now consists of things I wouldn't have chosen.

She's offered to collect groceries for me again next Thursday, since she's passing the shop. I want to accept the help. I also want to say that some brands on the list are deliberate preferences, not suggestions she should improve. How can I make the next shop clearer without sounding as if I don't appreciate the time she saved me?

Thank her for the time and separate that from the products: 'It really helped that you collected the shopping. For cereal and coffee, could you stick to the exact ones next time?' That gives her a usable request without requiring you to praise a substitution you didn't enjoy.

Her willingness to help doesn't mean she wants to follow detailed brand instructions every week. Ask whether that arrangement still suits her. If she prefers to shop quickly and make choices herself, another method may be better for the few items that matter to you.
