Can I start eating while my friends are still arranging food photos?

Food category photographFood

The dumplings arrived steaming. Before I picked up my chopsticks, my friend moved my plate closer to the window and said, "Just one minute." Another friend wanted an overhead shot, then a picture with the drinks in it.

I waited through those and took a dumpling when my plate came back. "Oh, you've broken the arrangement," she said. I told her I'd come for dinner, which sounded sharper than I intended.

They enjoy keeping photos of our evenings. I like being included in the group picture, but I don't want my own meal to be a prop until everyone is satisfied. We ordered and paid separately; there wasn't one shared platter they were trying to capture.

Before the next dinner, is it fair to say they can photograph their plates while I eat mine? I'd happily pause for a quick picture if we agree what quick means. I don't want an argument over the final untouched dumpling every time we meet.

Separate the group memory from the food arrangement. You can join a group photo before the dishes arrive and still start your own meal when it is served. Your friend may value both kinds of picture, but neither requires unlimited control over the plate you've ordered.

The sharp reply is worth repairing without surrendering the request. 'I sounded annoyed because I'd already waited for several shots. I'd like to start when my plate comes back' gives her the missing context. You don't have to apologise for the dumpling itself.
