My contract ends in six weeks, but I’m being invited to plan next quarter

Career / Work category photographCareer / Work

The meeting invitation said “Next quarter planning.” My contract’s end date falls before that quarter starts.

I’m covering a project coordinator role for six months. My manager has praised the work and started asking what I’d like to take on next. When I asked about the role continuing, she said she hoped it would, but the budget hadn’t been confirmed.

I enjoy the job. Being included in the planning feels encouraging, and I can contribute useful information even if someone else eventually carries the work forward. But I don’t know whether to treat these discussions as preparation for a continuing role or as work to hand over.

I’ve avoided asking again because I don’t want to sound impatient. The end date is getting closer anyway.

How would you ask for a clearer timeline while continuing to do the job well? What would you want clarified before accepting responsibility for a project that runs past the current end date?

Ask when a decision is expected and who can confirm it. “I’m happy to contribute to planning. My current end date is six weeks away—when should I expect an answer about continuation?” connects the two facts without treating an invitation as an offer or the delay as a rejection.
