Mum told everyone I got a job when I've only reached the final interview. How do I correct it?

Family category photographFamily

“Your mum says you'll be starting on Monday,” my aunt said across the dinner table. Six people turned to congratulate me.

I have a final interview on Monday. There is no offer. When Mum first misheard the news, I said, “Hopefully,” because she was so excited. I never clearly corrected her. By dinner she had told relatives that I'd be leaving my current job.

I smiled through the congratulations and changed the subject. Now my cousin wants me to help her apply to the same employer because she thinks I have an inside contact. Mum says correcting everyone will make it sound as though I failed, even though I haven't had the interview.

I want to undo the story without blaming her for the part I helped along. Should I message the family group before Monday, or wait until I know the result? I would rather walk into the interview thinking about the job than about how to explain losing one I never had.

Correct it before the interview: “Small correction to the dinner news: Monday is my final interview, not my start date. I should have made that clearer. Thanks for wishing me luck.” That accounts for your silence without accusing Mum in the family chat or promising an update the moment the interview ends.

Mum's version makes an ordinary interview outcome feel like losing a secured job. Her wish to protect you from embarrassment is adding to the pressure. You could tell her privately, “I need people to understand where things stand so I can interview without carrying a promise.”
