My sister wants Mum's recipe tin because she cooks more. I want the handwritten cards. How do we decide?

“I'll scan everything for you. It makes sense for the tin to live with someone who'll use it,” my sister said.

Mum is moving to a smaller place. She handed us her old recipe tin and said, “Pick a home for it. I just want you both to have the recipes.” She uses typed versions on her phone now and wants the boxes cleared before moving weekend.

My sister cooks from the tin almost every week when she visits. I use it a few times a year. I can see her argument, and scanning fifty cards is work she has offered to do. But I want the cards with Mum's crossed-out quantities and her note that I used to pick the raisins out. A file would give me the recipe; I would still miss that piece of paper.

I asked about splitting the cards. My sister said that would break up the set and make it harder to find things. She suggested I choose five favourites, but I don't know which five would stop me feeling that I had given the rest away too quickly.

Mum says, “Please don't make this another thing I have to organise.” I don't want our disagreement added to her moving list.

Is there a way to weigh regular use and sentimental attachment without making either of us prove that we care more about Mum?

Say what you are asking for before debating who cooks more: “I want to keep some of Mum's original handwriting, and I haven't chosen which cards matter most yet.” That makes your concern more specific. Your sister's offer solves access to the recipes, but it doesn't necessarily answer what you want from the paper itself.
