I order the same dish at every family restaurant meal. Do I owe everyone a more adventurous choice?

Food category photographFood

I was halfway through ordering grilled chicken when my brother interrupted: "We came all this way and you're having that again?" He'd chosen a restaurant with dishes he was excited to try.

I told the waiter I'd stick with my order. Later my brother said I made the evening feel wasted, as if his choice of restaurant hadn't been worth the trip. I'd enjoyed being with everyone; I just wanted a meal I knew I'd like.

I don't have an allergy I'm asking the restaurant to accommodate, and I'm not looking for a diagnosis of my food preferences. There are unfamiliar dishes I'm curious about, but choosing an entire main feels different from trying a small amount.

Is offering to share a starter a reasonable middle ground, or does that still turn my plate into a family project? I want my brother to feel his choice mattered without promising to enjoy whatever he puts in front of me.

You did go to his chosen restaurant. Ordering a dish you enjoy doesn't erase that effort or the evening together. Tell him what you appreciated about the outing, and ask him to let you finish ordering next time. Interrupting in front of the waiter made a private preference unusually public.

A shared starter is reasonable if you're interested in it. Choose it yourself from the menu, perhaps with his suggestions. It stops being a middle ground if you offer only to end the criticism and then spend the first course proving you're sufficiently open-minded.
