How do we tell my aunt that her cash wedding gift didn't reach us?

Weddings category photographWeddings

"Did the £200 come in handy?" my aunt asked. We have her wedding card, but there wasn't any money in its envelope when we opened it.

She says she put the cash inside before sealing it. The cards were moved from the reception table to another room, then into our car. Several people helped, and we don't have a record of which envelope was where. We've checked the bags, card box and packaging at home.

My partner wants to thank her and say nothing because she might feel embarrassed. I don't want to pretend we received money we haven't seen. I also don't want an honest conversation to become an accusation against the people who helped us.

What should we say, and how much searching should we ask others to do before accepting we may not know what happened?

Tell her what you know: you received the card, there was no cash when you opened it, and you've been checking the things brought home. Thank her for the intended gift without saying you received it.

Don't turn "several people moved the cards" into evidence against a particular person. At the moment you have a missing amount and an uncertain chain of events.
