Can I add my sister as a second maid of honour after my friend has done the planning?

Weddings category photographWeddings

My friend saw "joint maids of honour" on the programme draft and asked whether I'd meant to send her a different version. I hadn't told her I was thinking of adding my sister.

I asked my friend a year ago. She's organised the shower and been the person I call about the wedding. My sister and I were barely speaking then. We've become close again over the last few months, and I'd love to acknowledge that at the ceremony.

My friend says she isn't trying to own a title. She wishes I'd spoken to her before putting a changed one in a document. I agree. I also don't want to ask for permission to include my sister in my wedding.

How do I repair the way I handled it while deciding whether this is actually the role I want my sister to have? I may have reached for a familiar title before thinking about what either person would do.

Apologise for letting her learn from the draft. That doesn't require asking her to approve your relationship with your sister. It recognises that you changed something you had specifically offered her without a conversation.

What does having two maids of honour mean in your ceremony and preparations? Decide that before trying to reassure either person. "Joint" can sound inclusive while leaving both unsure about the role.
