How do we choose a film when our most enthusiastic friend has seen everything?

Entertainment category photographEntertainment

Our film poll had three choices. Under each one, the same friend wrote, 'Seen it.' When I asked which he'd watch again, he replied with four titles none of the rest of us recognised.

Four of us meet once a month. He knows far more films than I do, and his suggestions have introduced me to things I loved. But lately someone else's selection rarely survives his first reply. Last month we spent longer choosing than discussing the film afterward.

He says he's only sharing information, not vetoing anything. I realised we were treating every 'seen it' as a reason to remove the choice ourselves.

I'd like to try rotating the final choice, with advance notice if someone doesn't want to join. Is that fair to the person who brings the most knowledge, or are we turning a shared film club into four separate invitations?

Try asking, 'Seen it and happy to rewatch, or seen it and declining?' You noticed that the rest of you were supplying the veto yourselves. Clarifying that meaning may solve more than an elaborate new voting system.

Knowing the most films can make him a useful recommender. It doesn't automatically make everyone else's choices preliminary drafts of his. Rotating selection gives less experienced members a chance to bring a film they actually want to discuss.
