Is it fair to skip a guest's long song on a shared party playlist?

Entertainment category photographEntertainment

At minute nine of an instrumental track, someone asked whether the speaker was stuck. My friend said, 'The good part is coming,' and moved her glass beside my hand on the skip button.

I'd invited everyone to add two songs to a dinner playlist. I hadn't set a length limit. Her first choice was seventeen minutes long; mine had both been under four.

People were trying to talk, and I had wanted background music, but I'd also told them to choose things they loved. I skipped the track at twelve minutes. She said I'd embarrassed her and treated her contribution as less valid than the familiar pop songs.

I could have turned the volume down instead. How do I repair that without promising that every future contribution must play in full, whatever sort of evening we're having?

Two songs was your rule, and she followed it. Acknowledge that before proposing a duration limit next time. Her choice wasn't a trick just because you had imagined something closer to eight minutes per guest.
