How do I take back a movie spoiler that was only a confident guess?

Funny category photographFunny

'Well, that ruins it,' my friend said, reaching for the remote.

Ten minutes into a mystery film, I had announced that the lift operator was the missing man's twin. I sounded certain. I wasn't. I'd seen two similar hats on the poster and invented a theory before we pressed play.

I meant to say, 'I bet he's the twin.' Instead I said, 'That's his twin,' and then enjoyed everyone looking impressed for half a second. My friend thinks I've seen the film and let the ending slip. She wants to switch to something else.

We paused before finding out whether my guess was even possible. I said, 'It's more complicated than that,' which added a second layer of imaginary knowledge. How do I undo this without offering another theory that might also turn out to be a spoiler?

Say exactly what you knew: 'I haven't seen it. I guessed from the hats on the poster and said it as a fact. The complicated bit was me trying to cover that.' It is an awkward admission, but it gives your friend the information she needs to decide whether to keep watching.

Don't assure her the twin idea is wrong. You don't know that either. The repair is explaining that it was unverified speculation, not replacing one confident claim with another. She may still find the guess distracting, and you can let her choose whether to continue.
