How do I confess that my thriving office fern is plastic?

Funny category photographFunny

'Could you bring me a little bit to grow?' Sam asked, pointing at the fern on my desk.

The fern is plastic. I bought it after forgetting two real desk plants. When Sam first admired it, I said it was thriving on neglect. I assumed the shiny leaves made the joke obvious. He replied that he'd have to try my approach.

Since then he's pointed out its 'new growth' twice. I smiled because correcting him in front of the team felt embarrassing. Last week I moved one leaf to fit a folder behind it; this may have been the growth he noticed.

Now he wants a piece for his niece's windowsill project, and I've said I'll see what I can do. I can do nothing horticultural. Is a private 'I should have said this sooner' enough, or should I bring him a real little plant as an apology?

Tell him before he plans around the cutting: 'The fern is artificial. I thought my neglect comment made that clear, but I should have corrected it when I realised you meant a real plant.' A private conversation would spare him a public reveal and end the uncertainty you helped extend.

Sam admired something on your desk and offered a friendly bit of conversation. You don't need to make the confession into a joke about his powers of observation. The folders and moved leaf explain your embarrassment; the relevant admission is that you knew he had misunderstood and let it continue.
