Can I apologise for turning a dinner coin toss into best of nine?

Funny category photographFunny

'Are we choosing dinner or qualifying for the Olympics?' my partner asked.

We were choosing between noodles and burgers. I offered a coin toss because we were both hungry and neither wanted a long debate. She picked heads. Heads won. I immediately suggested best of three, smiling.

She agreed. Then I lost best of three and asked for best of five. By the ninth toss we were both annoyed, and she said she no longer cared what we ate. I ordered noodles, which was what I had wanted from the start.

I told myself we were doing a silly routine together. Looking back, she stopped laughing after toss three. I don't think this needs a grand relationship meeting, but 'it was just a joke' now sounds like a very elaborate way to get noodles.

Do I apologise for ignoring the original decision, or ask whether she'd actually wanted burgers?

Apologise for changing the finish line after losing: 'I suggested the toss, then kept trying until I got noodles. That wasn't the quick decision I promised.' You can ask about the burgers too, but her preference shouldn't have to be proved before you acknowledge what you did.

The ninth toss makes a good story, but you noticed she stopped laughing much earlier. That is the point where the shared routine seems to have become your routine. Keep that detail in mind next time, rather than trying to establish a universally acceptable number of comedy coin tosses.
