How do I keep Grandma's help when we disagree about the baby's nap setup?

Parenting category photographParenting

"She sleeps longer like this," my mother said. My three-month-old was on her tummy in the cot, with the blanket Mum had crocheted tucked around her.

I moved her onto her back and removed the blanket. We have a firm, flat mattress in a safety-approved cot, but Mum thinks my rules are stopping the baby from settling. She pointed out that she raised three children and sat in the room throughout the nap.

[CDC guidance applies back-sleeping and a firm, flat sleep surface to every sleep, including naps, and says to keep blankets and other soft bedding out](https://www.cdc.gov/sudden-infant-death/sleep-safely/). I'm following that. I need to work out whether Mum will follow it too.

She looks after the baby one morning a week while I work. When I said we couldn't repeat that nap setup, she heard that I thought she was a bad grandmother. Alternative childcare would cost more than I earn during those hours. How would you discuss the arrangement without turning appreciation for her help into permission to ignore the sleep plan?

The [CDC recommendations](https://www.cdc.gov/sudden-infant-death/sleep-safely/) cover naps as well as nighttime sleep. Being in the room doesn't replace the recommended sleep setup. Thank her for the morning she gives you, then ask directly whether she will use the cot as agreed every time the baby sleeps.

The blanket can still matter as something she made with love, without being in the cot. Keep it out of the sleep space. That separates appreciation for the gift from approval of how it was used; you don't have to reject the whole object to change the nap arrangement.
