How did a cropped photo still reveal where my workshop is?

Technology category photographTechnology

I cropped the street-facing window out of a photograph before emailing it to an online craft group. I wanted to show the workbench without turning my home into part of the conversation.

A member replied privately that the attachment's photo information included a map location. I checked the image in Photos on my iPhone and saw location information there too. I had been thinking only about what was visible in the picture.

I have asked the organiser to help remove the shared attachment, without claiming I can recall copies already downloaded. What should I change for the next photo? I enjoy having location information in my own photo library, so I would prefer a deliberate sharing choice to switching things off without understanding what I lose.

I knew how to hide the window. I had not thought to check what travelled with the file.

Apple explains that shared photos may carry location metadata even when the visible image does not show the place. In Photos, review the image information and the sharing Options; you can turn Location off for a share. Follow the instructions for your device's current interface.
