Does adding a travel eSIM mean my home line has stopped roaming?

Technology category photographTechnology

My partner saw the travel plan installed on my iPhone and said, “Good, that's the phone sorted.” Two line names still appeared in Settings. I realised I did not know which one would carry data when we landed.

The travel eSIM is for an eight-day visit. I bought it for maps and messages, but I also want my usual number available for a call from the person looking after our cat. My partner suggested turning both roaming switches off, which sounds simple until I read that I need to follow the travel provider's own setup instructions.

Apple says a travel eSIM can be used by itself or alongside a home line, and keeping both active can still involve home-provider roaming fees. [Apple's travel guidance](https://support.apple.com/en-ie/118227).

What should I confirm before departure? I want one agreed setup rather than discovering at the airport that we each meant something different by “the travel SIM is on.”

Check the selected mobile-data line, whether data switching is allowed, and each provider's required settings before the trip. Apple documents choosing the data line separately from keeping two lines active. Follow the travel provider's instructions rather than switching every roaming option off indiscriminately. [Dual SIM controls](https://support.apple.com/en-gb/109317).

Ask the home provider what keeping that number active could cost for calls and messages on this trip. A travel data purchase does not settle the home contract's charging rules. Apple's travel guide warns that home-line roaming fees can still apply when both lines remain active. [Apple guidance](https://support.apple.com/en-ie/118227).
