Does paying for website maintenance mean our domain renewal is covered?

Technology category photographTechnology

The reminder said our club's .com registration was due in ten days. I forwarded it to the person who maintains our website. She replied, “I look after the pages. The domain is in the old chair's account.”

We paid the annual website invoice last month. I had assumed that kept everything running. The old chair is away, the current chair wants me to pay the reminder immediately, and I have not yet confirmed which company holds the registration or what the invoice included.

The site still opens, which makes the others feel the reminder cannot be urgent. I do not want to discover the answer by waiting for something to stop working.

How would you untangle this before paying twice or missing a renewal? I want a clear record of who handles the registration, its contact details and the next bill, rather than another note saying the website person probably has it.

First confirm the registrar through a trusted route and establish which account and renewal the reminder concerns. Compare that with the paid invoice and the maintainer's agreed work. Paying for page maintenance does not tell you what this particular registration bill includes.

ICANN explains that registrants manage domain settings through their registrar and that the registration agreement sets out that relationship. Its registrant page includes a lookup route for finding a registrar. Use the actual registration details, not a guess based on who edits the website. [ICANN guidance](https://www.icann.org/registrants).

The current website loading answers a different question from whether the next registration period has been paid. Ask for confirmation of the renewal status and deadline from the registrar or authorised account contact. Do not use an interruption as your first check.
