Do I need to make an extra trip to return the coat I accidentally upgraded to?

Funny category photographFunny

'Mine has a blue lining,' Nina said on the phone. 'Does yours suddenly have a blue lining?'

It did. I had left a party in Nina's black coat. For the whole walk home I thought my usual coat looked unusually good under streetlights. Mine was still at the host's house with two old receipts in the pocket.

Nina laughed and suggested exchanging them over coffee on Saturday. It's Wednesday. I offered to take hers back tonight, but she said she was busy. I can leave it with the host tomorrow, though that would mean a thirty-minute detour and another trip for Nina.

My friend says Saturday is clearly fine because Nina proposed it. I keep imagining her needing the coat before then and being too polite to say. Should I ask once more about timing, or trust the plan she gave me? I would like my conscience to stop admiring the blue lining.

Trust Saturday unless Nina gives you a reason to change it. She proposed that plan and declined tonight. You can add one useful line: 'If you need it sooner, I can bring it to the host tomorrow; otherwise Saturday works.' Then let her answer rather than trying to solve a need she hasn't reported.

Keep her coat ready to exchange and check the pockets for anything you added, such as your keys or scarf. That is a practical thing you can do now. The lovely lining doesn't require a whole extra delivery arrangement chosen without Nina.

Your friend has a point: Nina's own words are better evidence of her schedule than your imagined version of her politeness. A coat mix-up is inconvenient, but accepting her offered coffee exchange can also be a perfectly ordinary way to repair it.
