Do I need a bigger monitor, or a better way to arrange windows?

Technology category photographTechnology

I spent the invoice review moving a PDF in front of a spreadsheet, then moving the spreadsheet in front of the PDF. My friend watched for a minute and said, “You need a bigger monitor.”

The one on my desk is twenty-four inches. I can read each document comfortably on its own. I lose my place when I keep switching between the supplier's lines and our job list. The screen I have been offered would cost $360, and I have only just cleared a place for this desk.

My friend thinks learning window controls would be a false economy. I think buying more screen before I know how I want to use the space could be an expensive version of the same confusion.

Would you try arranging this exact task differently first, or borrow a larger display to see whether it changes the work? I want fewer lost rows, not a desk that looks more convincing in a photograph.

Use the invoice review as the comparison, with the actual PDF and job list readable at the same time. Try the window arrangement your current system and apps support. If it still leaves you hunting for each row, a borrowed larger display could test the next option.

The $360 offer is for a particular screen, not a conclusion about productivity. Ask what you could comfortably see on that display in this task. The size on its box does not answer your question about losing your place.
