Are red, amber and green dots enough for our project dashboard?

Technology category photographTechnology

My colleague printed the dashboard and asked which jobs were late. The red, amber and green dots had become three similar grey circles.

On my monitor, the board looked beautifully clean. Adding words such as “waiting for approval” and “ready” made the columns wider, which was why I had replaced them with colours. The colleague says she also finds the dots hard to distinguish on her phone.

Should I keep the colours and add labels, or abandon the dots? I wanted a quick overview. I have made the page tidier by asking the reader to supply information it no longer states.

Keep the colour if it helps a quick glance, but give the status another clear form, such as a visible word. W3C's Use of Color guidance says colour should not be the only means of conveying information. [W3C explanation](https://www.w3.org/WAI/WCAG22/Understanding/use-of-color.html).

“Waiting for approval” is more useful than “amber” even for someone who sees the dots clearly. It tells the reader what kind of delay they are looking at. The wider column may be doing real work rather than adding clutter.
