Do I have to pretend I haven't guessed the surprise picnic?

Funny category photographFunny

'Put the blanket in the car when she isn't looking,' my friend whispered while I was standing behind the kitchen door.

Then another friend asked, much too casually, whether I liked Saturday afternoons, parks and small sandwiches. I said yes to all three. I think I have detected a picnic.

They're arranging it to thank me for helping with a move. I like the thought and would enjoy it. But one organiser has asked me to invent a reason to go out on Saturday, and I can see the others getting tangled in excuses.

I could tell them I've guessed and offer to carry things. I could also let them have the surprise, though I don't want to perform an astonishment so large that it needs rehearsal.

What's the kindest way to accept the picnic without making their secrecy feel pointless or claiming that a car blanket has stunned me?

You can be honestly pleased when it happens even if you aren't honestly shocked. 'This is lovely; thank you for doing it' is a real response to their effort. You don't have to announce how early you solved the blanket-and-sandwich clues.

If their excuses are making the planning harder, quietly tell one organiser you've guessed enough to help with timing. Let that person decide whether the others want to keep the remaining details secret. You needn't turn the whole group into a meeting about the failed surprise.
