How do I ask our volunteer table to stop turning every leaflet into an origami bird?

Funny category photographFunny

'This one has a beak,' I said, showing the other volunteers my folded leaflet.

We were preparing one hundred information packs for Saturday's community event. The leaflets were supposed to fit inside envelopes. I made a bird during a short pause because I was pleased I'd remembered the folds.

Two people copied it. Soon we had twelve birds, one envelope and a debate about wings. The coordinator came back and asked how many packs were ready. I held up the envelope.

We only have another hour together. The birds can be unfolded, but all the little adjustments are slowing us down. One volunteer says they'll make the packs more memorable. Another seems relieved to be doing something fun.

I started the distraction. Can I suggest returning to plain folded leaflets without sounding as though everyone else took my good idea too far?

Own the change in direction: 'I started the birds, but we've only finished one pack. Let's get the hundred envelopes ready first.' You can suggest keeping the existing birds as table decorations if the coordinator wants them, without turning every leaflet into another craft project.

Ask the coordinator what the packs actually need to contain and how the leaflets should fit. That gives the table a shared task again. Don't assume a bird-shaped sheet suits the event just because it is memorable; the information still has to work for the people receiving it.
