Can Mum's diabetes meal plan include the rice she actually likes?
HealthMy sister took the rice bowl off the table before Mum sat down. "We're all helping now," she said.
Mum was recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. She has an appointment with her care team to discuss food, but our family has already built competing plans. My sister wants no rice in the house. My uncle says brown rice means nobody needs to think about portions. Mum has stopped joining either conversation.
She cooks for herself most evenings. The list my sister printed replaces familiar meals with ingredients Mum does not usually buy, and nobody has volunteered to pay for them or cook them.
[NIDDK recommends working with the healthcare team on an eating plan that fits the person](https://www.niddk.nih.gov/health-information/diabetes/overview/healthy-living-with-diabetes). I want Mum to bring a few examples of her usual meals to that appointment and ask about choices and amounts for her own plan.
How can I support that without becoming the third relative telling her what she is allowed to eat?
