Dad won't use the walking aid he was given. Should I remove the hallway rug anyway?

Health category photographHealth

Dad pushed the walking aid behind his armchair and said, "That can stay there until I actually need it."

He had been assessed after a fall, and the clinician recommended the aid. He says the handles make him feel old and that it catches on the edge of the hallway rug. My brother wants to remove the rug while Dad is at his club so there is one less thing to argue about.

The rug belonged to Mum. Dad has already watched us rearrange the kitchen "to help" and then complained that he could not find anything.

I want to raise both the catching problem and his reluctance with the team that assessed him, with his agreement. I also want the hallway safer, but I am not convinced a secretly missing rug will make him trust the rest of the plan.

How would you discuss a change that has a practical reason and a sentimental cost?

The aid catching on the rug is specific information for the assessing team. Ask about its fit and use in that hallway rather than assuming Dad's reluctance is only pride. A problem with the route can exist alongside discomfort about being seen with the aid.

[NHS falls guidance includes home safety checks, avoiding trip hazards and considering walking aids](https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/falls/). It supports taking the hallway concern seriously; it does not tell this family how to fit equipment or alter the rug safely.
