Can I ask a neighbour to switch off the sound on a Halloween decoration when children walk past?

Neighbours category photographNeighbours

The skeleton beside my neighbour's front path screamed just as my son reached our gate. He dropped his pumpkin drawing and refused to walk back past it.

My neighbour came out laughing, then stopped when he saw the tears. He apologised and showed us that the decoration's sound can be switched off separately. My son calmed down once it was quiet.

The next day the sound was back on. My neighbour says the surprise is the joke and that children who enjoy Halloween love it. My son wants us to take the long way home so we don't pass the gate. I don't expect one frightened child to decide everybody's decorations, but the sound is being triggered during ordinary trips along the pavement.

Would it be reasonable to ask for silent daytime hours and leave the louder version for an agreed Halloween evening? The skeleton itself isn't the problem for my son. I want to ask about the part our neighbour has already shown he can change.

Ask about the sound rather than the entire display. He demonstrated a quiet version that helped in that moment, so you have a specific adjustment to discuss instead of asking him to abandon Halloween.

Your son can be frightened even if other children enjoy it. Neither reaction needs to become a claim about what all children should tolerate or what all decorations should look like.
