How do I challenge a neighbour who tells my guests to remove their shoes at the building entrance?

Neighbours category photographNeighbours

My friend reached my flat carrying her trainers and asked, “Is this a shoes-off building?”

It isn't an arrangement we have agreed. My downstairs neighbour had met her at the communal entrance and said, “We leave shoes off here to keep it clean.” I ask people to remove shoes inside my own flat, but my friend thought she had to do it before coming upstairs.

The neighbour cleans the entrance tiles herself between the building's scheduled cleans. She says people bring mud through and nobody else notices because she deals with it. I can see why she feels taken for granted.

I thanked her for the cleaning and asked her not to present her preference as a rule to my visitors. She replied, “So you want me to keep cleaning up after everyone?”

I don't. I would support an agreed entrance-cleaning plan. I am unsure how to say that without making shoes-off instructions to strangers the price of keeping the tiles clean.

Would it be fair to take both questions to the next residents' discussion: how we look after the entrance, and what instructions anybody is authorised to give guests?

Tell your visitors what your own flat arrangement is before they arrive, while the shared discussion happens. They shouldn't have to guess whether the first resident they meet speaks for the building.

Her cleaning has become invisible labour, and thanking her alone may not answer that. Be willing to discuss a practical contribution to keeping the entrance clean, rather than only correcting her wording.
