How do I get out of a karaoke duet I signed up for by naming a floor lamp?

'Floor Lamp and Dave, you're after the next song,' the host announced.

Floor Lamp was apparently me. In our karaoke chat, Dave had asked for duet partners. I thought we were helping him invent a stage name and suggested 'Dave and the Floor Lamp'. He replied, 'Perfect,' and I added a laughing face.

At the party he handed me the second microphone. I told him I wasn't singing. He said he'd chosen a song we both knew and had skipped asking anyone else because I'd already volunteered. He looked genuinely disappointed, not just theatrically abandoned by his furniture.

I don't sing in front of groups. Dave has heard me singing in the car and says this is only twelve friends, but those twelve friends are precisely the audience I don't want. I stayed to cheer him on; he sang solo and changed the name to 'Dave and the Missing Lamp'.

Can I explain the misunderstanding without making it sound as though he's foolish for reading my reply as a yes?

Start with the message you misunderstood: 'I thought we were choosing a stage name. I didn't realise you were counting me as a duet partner, and I should have checked when you said perfect.' That makes room for his reasonable reading and your real reluctance to sing.

Knowing a song and wanting to perform it are separate things. Dave's car example explains why he thought you'd be comfortable, but it doesn't settle your preference about twelve watching friends. You can say you enjoyed cheering him on without offering a reluctant duet as compensation.
