AITA for keeping my Sunday lunch plans after my partner booked a surprise weekend away?

AITA category photographAITA

"I've kept Saturday free," I told my partner when he asked me to leave that day open for a surprise.

On Thursday he showed me a cabin booking for Saturday afternoon through Monday morning. I said it looked lovely, but I had lunch with my two oldest friends on Sunday and wasn't going to cancel it.

He said, "I thought keeping the weekend free was the whole point."

He'd asked about Saturday. He agrees he used that word, but says he expected me to understand that a surprise might include staying over. He'd paid $240, and the confirmation he showed me said the booking couldn't be refunded. He had worked six Saturdays in a row and wanted us to have a proper break together.

The Sunday lunch isn't an emergency or a major birthday. We arrange it roughly once a month. This one took a lot of back-and-forth because one friend is only in town for a few days. I hadn't mentioned it to my partner because it was already on our shared calendar, which he admits he hadn't checked.

I offered to go to the cabin on Saturday and leave Sunday morning. He said a single night would feel like spending the whole trip watching the clock. I then told my friends I would definitely be at lunch, before my partner and I had finished talking.

Now he says I treated an effort to do something nice for us as a scheduling mistake to be corrected. I think confirming lunch stopped my friends being held in uncertainty, but it also closed the conversation while he was still upset. AITA for deciding to keep it?

The actual request was to keep Saturday free, and you did. It's hard to treat Sunday as promised when it was already on the calendar. Your partner can be disappointed that the surprise doesn't work as imagined without that disappointment proving you broke an agreement.

There is a difference between deciding to keep lunch and announcing that decision while he was still trying to explain why the trip mattered. It may have sounded as though the six working Saturdays were irrelevant to you. You can recognize his need for time together while still keeping the commitment to your friends.
