A friend wrote a song for our wedding. Can we accept the gift without a live performance?

Weddings category photographWeddings

"I'll play it just before your first dance," Ben said, sending a seven-minute demo. We'd said we would love to hear the song he'd written. We hadn't agreed to put it in the reception.

He's a close friend who writes music in his spare time. The lyrics are kind, and the gift means a lot. The demo is also very personal. My partner doesn't want to sit in front of the room while everybody watches us react to it.

We've arranged a short set of speeches and then our dance. Ben says the song belongs at the wedding because that's what he wrote it for. I can see why listening later might feel like putting a handmade present in a drawer.

How do we thank him without accepting a performance neither of us wants? I made this harder by replying "Can't wait" before asking what he had in mind.

Tell him what you appreciated in the song before addressing where it is played. A specific line that meant something to you will sound warmer than calling it lovely and moving straight to the running order.
