A cheap used Xbox Series S won't play my discs. Is keeping my old console the better compromise?

Gaming category photographGaming

My brother found a used Xbox Series S offered for $180 and called it an easy upgrade. I started arranging to sell my older Xbox, then looked at the eight game cases on my shelf.

The seller hadn't claimed it took discs; I'd assumed backward compatibility covered the games I already had. [Xbox's official page says Series S uses digital games only and doesn't play physical discs](https://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/backward-compatibility). It also explains that compatible disc games on a console with a disc drive still need the disc in the drive to play.

I mostly play two of those eight games. I could keep the old console for them, but I was counting on the sale to help pay for the new one. Buying digital copies might add cost, and I haven't checked availability or current prices for my exact titles.

What would you compare before deciding? My brother thinks I'm letting old boxes stop me upgrading. I'm trying to work out whether this offer solves a problem I have or creates a second set of purchases.

Start with the two games you actually play. Check whether you have separate digital entitlements, whether digital versions are available, and their current prices. Physical ownership alone doesn't establish digital access on Series S; [Xbox specifies digital games only for that model](https://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/backward-compatibility).

An upgrade funded by selling the old console is a different budget from an upgrade where you keep both. Write down those two totals before discussing old boxes. The disc cases represent access to games you use, even if most of the shelf can be left behind.

What is the specific problem with the current console: a game you can't play, a fault, or simply wanting the newer machine? Each could justify a different choice. Your brother's excitement is useful information about his preference, not evidence that this offer fits your needs.
