I returned a borrowed game safely but damaged the collector's box. What should I replace?

Gaming category photographGaming

"The cartridge isn't the bit I'm upset about," my friend said. I'd returned his game in a plastic case because the cardboard collector's box had been crushed in my backpack.

I thought the box was just packaging. He had lent me the whole edition so I could look through the art booklet, and I'd taken it on the train without asking. The booklet and cartridge are fine; one corner of the box is folded inward.

I offered to buy an ordinary replacement case. He sent a listing for another complete collector's edition costing $140. He says a replacement outer box is hard to find. I haven't checked that myself, and neither of us has agreed that the listing is the only remedy.

How do I acknowledge damaging something he cared about without immediately buying a second game, booklet and everything else? I want to repair the loan, not argue that his interest in the box is silly.

Calling it packaging was the misunderstanding; continuing to call it "just" packaging would turn it into a dismissal. You can say, "I didn't realize the box mattered, but I should have protected what you lent me." That accepts the damage without settling a $140 purchase on the spot.

Is the listing for a comparable condition, or simply the first complete edition he found? Look together for a replacement box or another agreed remedy before treating one asking price as the amount you must spend. Don't promise a repair method that might make the fold worse.
