The windshield sunshade opened inside the car and claimed the entire front row

Illustration of an expanded silver sunshade filling the front seats of an empty parked car.Funny/WTF

I bought a folding windshield sunshade that came twisted into a small circular pouch.

The instructions said to remove it and allow it to expand.

I removed it while sitting in the driver’s seat.

The shade expanded immediately.

One edge struck the roof. Another covered the steering wheel. The center unfolded across my face, then continued into the passenger seat with the confidence of a device returning to its natural habitat.

For several seconds, the front of the parked car contained one person and an ambitious silver wall.

I tried pushing the shade toward the windshield. It bent in the middle and sprang back. I tried rotating it. The passenger-side edge knocked an empty water bottle into the footwell.

I stopped moving, opened the driver’s door and stepped outside with the shade folded loosely in both hands. With room to see the frame, I let it open fully, identified the top and bottom, then placed it against the inside of the windshield from the passenger side. The sun visors held it in position.

The next challenge was folding it after use. I did not practice that while seated behind the wheel either. I stood beside the car, followed the printed twist-and-fold diagram and kept the springy frame pointed away from other people and nearby vehicles.

It collapsed into the pouch after two attempts.

The product worked well once it reached the windshield. The difficulty came from releasing a spring-frame object in the smallest possible working space and assuming “allow it to expand” meant “invite it directly into your face.”

The car was parked with the engine off throughout, so the event remained comedy rather than traffic. That feels like the key rule.

What is the calm setup for a spring-style sunshade? Open and orient it outside the vehicle, install it while parked and practice folding it in clear space before attempting the maneuver beside doors, mirrors or other people?

Let a spring-frame shade open fully outside the vehicle, identify its orientation and install it only while the car is parked.

Practice the recommended folding method in open space. Forcing the frame inside the car can make it spring back unpredictably.

Keep the frame away from faces, nearby people and vehicle paint while it expands. Do not handle or adjust it while driving.

If a sunshade occupies both front seats before reaching the windshield, does it need installation or a passenger ticket?
