The road map opened across the whole car and refolded into the shape of one county

I bought a paper road map as a backup for a weekend drive.

At a rest area, with the car parked, I unfolded it to check an alternate route.

One panel became two. Two became eight. Within seconds, the map covered the steering wheel, the passenger seat and part of the dashboard. The state had expanded to its official paper dimensions.

I found the route and then attempted to refold the map.

The first fold placed the legend outside. The second created a triangle. The third produced a compact shape that displayed one county and trapped the rest of the state inside it.

I opened it again.

Wind entered through the open door and lifted the eastern half of the map into my face.

I closed the door, carried the map to a picnic table and laid it flat. The original accordion creases were still visible. Instead of inventing new folds, I collapsed the vertical panels along their existing alternating lines, then folded the long strip along the horizontal creases.

The map returned to nearly its original rectangle. One corner remained slightly proud, but the state once again fit in the glove compartment.

I marked the relevant panel with a removable bookmark tab so I would not need to open the entire map for the same route. I also confirmed the directions before returning to the road.

The map had not been difficult to fold until I treated every crease as a suggestion and added several of my own. Large printed maps are organized accordions, not blank sheets waiting for creative interpretation.

What is the calm way to manage one? Pull over and park before reading, unfold only the needed panels when possible, keep it away from driving controls and use the existing mountain-and-valley crease pattern on a flat surface when refolding?
