I slept beside decorative hotel curtains while the real blackout curtain hid behind them

Funny/WTF category photographFunny/WTF

The hotel room had a wall of pale curtains that closed neatly across the window.

At bedtime, I pulled them together. Streetlights remained visible through the fabric, but I assumed that was the design.

At sunrise, the room became bright enough to support indoor agriculture.

I woke early and tried overlapping the curtain panels. Light continued passing through them because they were sheer curtains, a fact that became more obvious with every additional ray of morning sun.

I considered using the clips from a clothes hanger to hold the center closed. That would have improved the gap while doing nothing about the fabric itself.

When I opened the sheer layer, I noticed a narrow handle at the edge of the window recess. Behind the decorative curtains was a second, heavier panel stored almost entirely behind the wall trim.

I pulled it across the window.

The room became dark.

On the other side, a matching blackout panel completed the seal. Both had been present the entire night, hidden behind fabric whose main qualification was looking finished.

The next evening, I closed the blackout panels first and arranged the sheer curtains in front of them. The room stayed dark until the alarm sounded.

The hotel had provided exactly what I wanted. I had identified the visible layer as the only layer and accepted sunrise as a policy decision.

Curtain systems often have separate purposes: privacy, decoration and light blocking. If the first panel is translucent, checking behind it is more productive than trying to make thin fabric develop new material properties.

What is the polite troubleshooting sequence in an unfamiliar room? Look behind the visible panels for a second track or labeled control, check both sides of the window and contact the front desk if the blackout system is missing or damaged rather than pinning, taping or forcing hotel fixtures?

Check behind sheer or decorative curtains for a second track, recessed panel or labeled control before assuming the room has no blackout layer.

If no blackout panel exists, ask the front desk about the intended setup or another room rather than attaching makeshift items to hotel fixtures.
