I froze because either choice made me look bad

I thought I was just nearby until somebody made it my problem. The actual problem was not whether I had proof. I did. The problem was what using it would do to the person who had not agreed to be exposed.

I thought I was just nearby until somebody made it my problem.

The actual problem was not whether I had proof. I did. The problem was what using it would do to the person who had not agreed to be exposed. The whole mess started in an apartment hallway, and it involved neighbors arguing behind a half open door. A smoke detector blinked red above us. I wanted to stay calm and did not do an amazing job.

Deciding whether quiet danger required intervention. That sounds cleaner than it felt while it was happening. The person inside asked everyone to leave. A child began turning up the television. Now the person being blamed still does not know what I saw, and the manager is being called. I stood with my key in the lock.

Maybe I am using this to justify myself. Privacy is not automatically safety.
