AITA for entering a race without the friend I promised to train with?
AITAMy friend Jess and I began training for our first half-marathon together. We agreed we would register once both of us could run ten miles comfortably.
Jess developed knee pain and stopped training for six weeks. The race began selling out, and I had reached twelve miles. I registered without telling her.
Two days later, Jess’s physiotherapist cleared her to resume slowly. When she tried to register, the race was full.
She says our goal was not simply the distance; it was crossing the starting line together. I say I trained consistently and could not risk losing a place for an unknown recovery timeline.
There was a waitlist and a charity-entry option. I did not mention either before registering because I feared she would ask me to wait. She can still enter through the charity program, but the fundraising minimum is $600.
I offered to help raise it. Jess declined and stopped joining our shorter weekend runs.
The promise did not say I would skip the race if she was injured. It also did not mean much if I could quietly remove the only choice that required me to sacrifice something.
I have my bib. The person whose name was attached to the goal is no longer training beside me.
